It’s been a while

I stopped posting about my progress at the end of last year. It’s kind of difficult to pick up again after stopping for a while. At first it was “I’ll do it tomorrow”. Tomorrow became next week. Next week became next month and before I knew it SIX months had gone by.

Here’s a QUICK update about nothing specific just to get going again.

The great news is that simply because I stopped writing about my progress I didn’t actually stop my activities.

I’m glad I listened to suggestions about bundling up during the cold weather and go outside. I was running during snow storms and it was great 🙂

I’ve kept up with my jogging regimen until I twisted my ankle during a jog at night; not very smart.

I’ve gone out on the bike every chance I get. I’ve been increasing my distance and speed. This year I’ve been out 33 times and have done over 800 miles. The most miles I’ve ridden in a single day alone was 80 miles. I’ve also gone out a few times in group rides which are a ton of fun.

I’ve picked up a few other activities too. This year has been a year of many firsts. Things like yoga. Things like Zumba. Things like spinning class.
All in all this year has been pretty  awesome.

Until next time 🙂

First Morning Jog

I’ve had a few insomnia episodes lately. This Sunday and Monday for example, I was tossing and turning at 4am and 5am respectively.

Yesterday I crashed early. I was asleep by 8pm and woke up at 2:30 this morning. I wasn’t able to go back to sleep after waking up. Since I was up I decided to do something productive and different – I went for for a jog.

It was 4:30am when I left the house. One hour, 19 minutes and 5.4 miles later I was back home.

It wasn’t as bad as I thought. I was fully awake. The sky was dark and the air nippy. I was surprised at the amount of cars and people on the streets at that time. It’s now 10am and the sky still as dark now as when I left the house at 4:30 this morning.

I’ll attempt to repeat the early jog in the future. I also have to do something about my the insomnia.

On Reading

In the past I’ve written about my struggle with writing. Reading is writing’s little brother and I also struggled with it. I’ve never read for fun. I typically only read whatever I HAD to.

Over the past few years I’ve slowly been reading a more and more. I’ve made it a priority. In the past few months I’ve been listening to audio books while I jog or bike. It’s super convenient. One of my goals is to read more and read more broadly.

I figured that I should be able to get the essence of a book by reading or listening to it. There are certain benefits to READING for me. My vocabulary continues to expand and spelling has improved because I’m seeing the words on the page. Downside of me reading: there are words I don’t know how to pronounce. Downside of audio books: I don’t see how words are spelled; I can become distracted while listening, I’ve had to go back and re-listen to sections when I get distracted.

I’m looking forward to exercise my brain as well as my body.

Back to ‘normal’

I feel as if I’m getting back to my cadence from a month ago. As a matter of fact I think I might be doing better. I had my weekly goal of 4+ active days. I’ve increased it to 6 active days a week.

During the two weeks I was sick I was active only two days per week. Last week I started my new regimen of 6 active days a week. I didn’t do anything on Friday, every other day I was doing something; jogging, biking and walking.

The weather is getting cold. Soon I won’t be able to do much outside. Typical this is the time when I hibernate and don’t come out until next spring erasing any progress made this year.

This year I’m determined to break this cycle. I have a gym membership and I believe I’ll be cancelling it. I’m thinking of joining a crossfit gym instead. Having different activity options will probably help me keep me going back.

New goal: keep blog  entries short and frequent.

Keep moving. Keep making progress. Keep going. You’re doing great.

Guilt Run

Sunday I decided to go out for a jog at 11:05 pm. Why did I do this? I felt guilty 😔 It was my jog of shame. I was procrastinating most of the day before I decided to jog last second.

Why guilt? Two reasons 1) my goals have  4+ active days out of the week. I had only gone out on the bike three times. 2) I went  out with my friend Oscar to celebrate him getting his GED. I stuffed my face with a 20 oz T-Bone steak.

Saturday I rode 27 miles and I wanted to use Sunday as my rest/recovery day. But at the last second I jumped in my running shoes and shorts and headed out for a 3.7 mile jog from my house to the beach and back.

I thought to myself don’t make excuses. Check off the 4+ activities for the week in your goals. Also, I shouldn’t need too much recovery time after only 27 miles.

The good news: I came back 48 minutes and 30 seconds later. When I started jogging back in April this same course took me 1 hour and 4 minutes to complete. I’m happy with the progress.

The bad news: Monday I woke with a really bad case of plantar fasciitis. PF had all but gone away. I had gone out multiple times for longer jogs at Breakhart Reservation. The two differences 1) Breakheart has lots of hills and 2) I was moving faster on Sunday. I felt good; I didn’t feel pain; I wasn’t tired. I was really surprised when I almost fell to the ground when I got off my bed Monday morning!

My solution: Stop jogging/running for a couple of months until PF is completely gone. I will probably see a therapist about it. I’ll be going out on the bike on a regular basis to stay active.

I’ll increase the distance of my rides every week. Last week I did 20 miles. A few days later I did 27. This week I intend to do a 46 mile course. I don’t care about speed for now. I’ll focus on distance first. Speed is next on the list, but I want to be comfortable on the saddle for 3-4 hours.

I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks for reading. Keep moving.

Weekly Update #8

I slacked with the blog last week. I can’t believe I didn’t post anything during the week and this update is late. There’s a reason for it all but it’s not a very good reason.

The good news is that I stayed relatively active throughout and was able achieve my goal of getting out 4+ days a week.

On my last update I finish by saying I would either go a party and stuff my face with food or go riding. I kind of did both.

I went to the birthday party but didn’t stuff my face. I also went out on the bike after the party! And I broke the bike during that ride.

From the start of the ride I felt the chain slipping from on the gears. It, the chain, eventually came off the large chain ring on the way to Deer Island. On the way back home the chain came off the cassette and got stuck between the cassette and the seatstay.

One of the spokes broke and the rim bent. I was able to pull out the chain and walk the bike home for the last half mile.

I brought the bike to the shop on Tuesday to have it fixed and got some upgrades and accessories. I picked it up all fixed on Friday evening.

Weekly Breakdown:

Monday: My friend and I  walked Breakheart Reservation, 4.5 miles / 1 hour and 15 minutes. We followed the Couch to 4K app for the first half hour then we jogged up all the hills.

Wednesday: I went back to Breakheart Reservation with my cousin and his nephew. We biked the 4.5 miles, I didn’t log the activity so no time recorded. He let me borrow one of his old bikes 🙂 Thank you Jesus!

His nephew had an accident coming down one of the hills and scraped his knee and hand. He’s okay.

Saturday: I jogged my usual route around my house and the beach. It was 3.7 miles and 54 minutes. It wasn’t as hot as last week; it was only 80 degrees instead of 95!

Sunday: I went to Deer Island to practice clipping and un-clipping my new bike shoes to the new pedals. I went around the island 5 times and climbed one of the hills for a grand total of 13 miles in 1 hour and 2 minutes.

I was concerned with the pedals clipping and un-clipping mechanism. My friend Jose had told me I would fall the bike a few times before getting used it. I was determined not to fall and I didn’t, until I did!

Throughout the ride I was stopping and practicing un-clipping the shoes. I felt really comfortable after one hour. When I decided to call it a night, I rode back to the parking lot. I get into the parking lot. I un-clipped my right shoe. I came to a complete stop when I got to my car. I set my right foot on the floor. My body decides to go to the LEFT! I slowly fell to my left side. As I hit the ground I couldn’t stop laughing, I lay there for about a minute literally laughing out lout. I got a scraped knee.

This week I’ll be more active on the bike. I need to fall off a few more times I suppose! The goal for the week will be to get at least 30 miles in one session. The most I’ve done so far is 16 miles.

I mentioned that I had neglected the blog this week. The reason is that I started playing a game on my phone. I’m very close to being addicted to it. The good thing is that I’m aware of it and this week I will intentionally stop myself from playing it as much, but look at that sweet gear the commander is using!

Thanks for reading and hope you have a great week ahead!

Exciting Hour

Today I decided to sneak in a jog after work and before going the movies. I did however significantly underestimate the heat. I knew I was going to eat/drink with friends later in the night, so I was trying to offset calories.

I did my usual 3.8 mile loop close to my house in exactly 1 hour. I should have turned around right away as the heat was terrible. But I’m not very smart 🙂

As I started walking to warm up, I revisit The List of Lists from SRG to review objects to spot. I was on the hunt!

Within five minutes I spot a bicycle just laying outside of a school. I had to go back half a block to get into the school area to grab a shot.

Two minutes later I spot the cart! It’s by the bus stop just waiting for me. I crossed to street to get a close up shot.

I made my way to Revere Beach and my feet were cooked from jogging on pavement in the 95 degree weather. I quickly made my way to the sand! This is where I got a picture of the bird!

Turns out that Revere Beach is hosting a festival this weekend with sand sculptures, music and some rides!

If you have 2 minutes, watch the quick video.

On the way back home I saw a cool not so rusty little machine!

On the rusty machines front, I went by the rusty car again and took a day picture. It’s a pretty cool challenger!

Close to my house I found a recent accident. I didn’t investigate, but here is a 30 second video of it!

I intended for this to be published before going to the movies, but it’s getting posted AFTER and it’s Saturday 1:20am!

Hope you have a great weekend!
