Kitchen Corner: Tummy Tamers

Tummy trouble strikes us all, often at the worst times. Luckily, a few remedies to soothe those angry innards are sneakily hiding in your kitchen.

Gas, bloating, heartburn, plus a few unmentionables … we’ve all fallen victim to these digestive woes, probably in the last week or two. But don’t let it ruin your day—your kitchen is host to a few tried-and-true remedies to soothe your belly blues.

Ginger

Ginger is an old-time remedy for upset stomachs and nausea. In China, it has been used as a treatment for digestive complaints for more than 2,000 years. You can purchase ginger tinctures and capsules, or simply grate fresh ginger and add hot water to make a soothing tea.

Fennel

For gas, bloating, and heartburn, fennel is your go-to gal. Fennel seeds can be chewed or made into a tea. These clever little helpers stimulate your digestive tract to produce more gastric juices, and reduce inflammation. Fennel is also great for those suffering from constipation.

Mint

A well-known calmer for upset tummies, mint improves the flow of bile and eases stomach muscles—helping food pass through more quickly. The muscle-relaxing properties also help with painful gas-related symptoms. As for how to consume these lovely leaves? You guessed it! Add fresh or dried mint leaves to boiling water and drink as a tea.
